My wife and I recently rewatched "Trading Places," a seasonal favorite that always stirs some deep contemplation. The bet in the movie, turning the tables on wealth and poverty, made us think: can wealth be built on the struggles of the vulnerable, leaving them unable to meet even basic needs?
It's a narrative that begs for a different story—one where the privileged uplift the struggling, enabling them to thrive and build generational prosperity. This sentiment, born from our own struggles, fueled the creation of Lights Back On, a nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness and poverty.
Our journey began in 2013, just months after bringing our first child home. When a brutal winter storm hit, plunging temperatures to a chilling 11 degrees, we found ourselves unable to cover our electricity bills. We huddled together in one room, sharing a heater for warmth. Every trip to the restroom or attempt to cook was a calculated dance to distribute the heat.
This went on for a year, until by the grace of God, we emerged from that dark chapter into something better.
That experience changed us. It ignited a passion to extend a helping hand to those facing similar hardships. We've been there, we've felt the biting cold, and we've known the weight of financial strain. It's a perspective that goes beyond just running a nonprofit; it's personal.
Our story isn't glamorous, but it's ours. Through Lights Back On, we've found a way to transform our past into a beacon of hope for others. Not every form of help needs to be monetary because love transcends currency. While financial support is crucial for providing electricity bill assistance and other essential services, people always come first.
Have you or someone you know walked a similar path? We'd love to hear your story if you're comfortable sharing it. Together, let's turn hardship into hope, one light at a time.
