In the powerful words of Michael Jackson's "Earth Song," a plea echoes through time, urging humanity to unite in creating a world that embraces equality and prosperity for everyone.
2 Chronicles 7:14 reminds us, "If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." It's disheartening that some choose to remain in adversity rather than turn towards a path of righteousness that benefits all of humankind and restores our lands. Too often, this darkness is fueled by a desire for more, driven by greed.
Not long ago, on our way to celebrate a friend's return to Atlanta, we encountered a sight that shook us. A man lay on a bench at a bus stop, asleep. In a land that champions freedom, such scenes should be rare. We paused to refuel and discussed it with my wife. Together, we circled back, offering the man a small contribution towards a hotel room for the night.
Recently, a dear friend and her two young children faced eviction due to unaffordable living costs. The heartbreak of their situation was palpable, and we felt helpless. Thankfully, we managed to connect them with a resource just in time, preventing their belongings from being cast out into the street. But what if we hadn't found help? Where would they have gone? Regrettably, these concerns don't seem to weigh on those who aren't invested in building a better world for all.
Our world is marred by pressing issues: inequality, racism, bigotry, child trafficking, child poverty, homelessness, food insecurity, hatred, prejudice, and the absurdity of inhumanity towards fellow humans. Yet, just as scripture imparts, when we turn away from wickedness and return to the path of love and compassion, our lands can find healing.
The question remains: How will you contribute to the healing of our world, forging a brighter future not only for us but for generations yet to come? Together, through Lights Back On, we embark on a journey toward a world where every individual stands equal, where justice reigns, and where the light of hope illuminates every heart. Join us, and together, we'll create a legacy of compassion, unity, and lasting change.
